SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:The Concerto and the Symphony: We know that most orchestra concerts have a concerto on the first half and a symphony on the second half – but what exactly do those terms mean\, and how have they evolved throughout music history? We’ll use two beloved works from GTMF’s opening classical concert – Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 – to understand the key concepts behind the two most common forms in the orchestral repertoire\, as well as compare them to examples of earlier and later styles. \nDive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! Suitable for interested novices and seasoned fans alike\, this adult education group will explore the history\, theory and stories behind epic classical works each week. Led by Stoner Family Education Curator Meaghan Heinrich\, prepare for the coming weekend’s Festival Orchestra concerts or simply join the discussion in the Classical Music Listening Club.

SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Youthful Spirit and Mature Mastery: Samuel Barber’s The School for Scandal Overture and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 were both composed while their respective composers were still in college\, while Haydn penned his Trumpet Concerto at the age of 64. How does the age and life experience of composers shape the sound of their music? In this session\, we’ll look at works written in both the early and late stages of composers’ careers… and maybe a few midlife crisis pieces too! \nDive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Timbre through Time: Cowbells\, coconut shells\, a duck call and a referee’s whistle – these are just a few instruments called for in James MacMillan’s Britannia\, composed in 1994. But why does the orchestra shrink so much for the romantic-era violin concerto of Felix Mendelssohn and classical-era Symphony No. 104 of Haydn? The art of orchestration is all about which instruments play and when. We’ll learn about the evolution of the orchestra’s instruments and how and why it has expanded to include so many new colors. \nDive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! Suitable for interested novices and seasoned fans alike\, this adult education group will explore the history\, theory and stories behind epic classical works each week. SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Cinematic Soundscapes: Whether crafted for the silver screen or the concert hall\, music is a powerful way to take us to imaginative new places by giving us a soundtrack. We’ll study Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony to see how a composer put the sounds of nature into his music\, then see how golden age film composer Erich Korngold brought the sound of the movies to his violin concerto. Finally\, we’ll see how these pieces influenced modern film scores\, including John Barry’s music for Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves. \nDive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Italian Inspiration: A young Felix Mendelssohn composed his “Italian” Symphony after returning from a 10-month trip to the country\, while native Italians Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini became the most well-known voices in opera at the turn of the century. How did a visiting composer versus those who spent their lives and careers there use different approaches to bring the sounds of a culture to life? We’ll look at Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 and Verdi and Puccini’s arias\, as well as other music inspired by both foreign travels and devotion to homeland. \nSuitable for interested novices and seasoned fans alike\, this adult education group will explore the history\, theory and stories behind epic classical works each week. Led by Stoner Family Education Curator Meaghan Heinrich\, prepare for the coming weekend’s Festival Orchestra concerts or simply join the discussion in the Classical Music Listening Club.
