Hear “a Soviet artist’s reply to just criticism” and decide for yourself if Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is a work of genuine, patriotic contrition or a sarcastic critique of Stalin’s rule. Two compositions by Mozart round out the program, including the bassoon concerto, a thrilling tour-de-force for GTMF’s own Sue Heineman.
