SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Youthful Spirit and Mature Mastery: Samuel Barber’s The School for Scandal Overture and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 were both composed while their respective composers were still in college\, while Haydn penned his Trumpet Concerto at the age of 64. How does the age and life experience of composers shape the sound of their music? In this session\, we’ll look at works written in both the early and late stages of composers’ careers… and maybe a few midlife crisis pieces too! \nDive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! Suitable for interested novices and seasoned fans alike\, this adult education group will explore the history\, theory and stories behind epic classical works each week. Led by Stoner Family Education Curator Meaghan Heinrich\, prepare for the coming weekend’s Festival Orchestra concerts or simply join the discussion in the Classical Music Listening Club.

SUMMARY:On the Road: Out West at Jackson Hole History Museum
DESCRIPTION:Anton Miller\, violin\nRita Porfiris\, viola \n“Out West” film concert with Buster Keaton and the Miller-Porfiris Duo \nJoin us for an evening of silent western films with Buster Keaton and Roscoe Arbuckle\, accompanied by live music from GTMF musicians Rita Porfiris and Anton Miller. We begin with “The Great Train Robbery” (1902) one of the earliest of the genre\, with its famous and shocking final scene. Next will be the hilarious antics of Buster Keaton and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle\, as they turn a traditional western film into satire in “Out West” (1918). The music was arranged by Rita Porfiris to interact with the scenes and includes works by Grofé\, Gliere\, Grosz\, Copland\, and Mark O’Connor. \nStoner Family Education Curator Meaghan Heinrich leads programs that are accessible to all ages and bring music to life with explanations and demonstrations. Programming for this On the Road concert is forthcoming.

SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Timbre through Time: Cowbells\, coconut shells\, a duck call and a referee’s whistle – these are just a few instruments called for in James MacMillan’s Britannia\, composed in 1994. But why does the orchestra shrink so much for the romantic-era violin concerto of Felix Mendelssohn and classical-era Symphony No. 104 of Haydn? The art of orchestration is all about which instruments play and when. We’ll learn about the evolution of the orchestra’s instruments and how and why it has expanded to include so many new colors.

SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra: Melodies of Britain
DESCRIPTION:Music Director Sir Donald Runnicles celebrates his home islands with two distinct visions of Great Britain. Haydn’s final symphony was written and premiered in London\, a city that adored him like a native son\, while James MacMillan’s orchestral fantasy on patriotic British themes\, Britannia\, creates a “tapestry” of “surprising scenarios in the mind of the listener.” Not to be missed\, violinist Maria Ioudenitch makes her GTMF debut with Mendelssohn’s “jewel of the heart\,” the moving Violin Concerto. \nprogram\nJames MacMillan: Britannia \nMendelssohn: Violin Concerto\nHaydn: Symphony No. 104\, “London” \nSir Donald Runnicles\, conductor\nMaria Ioudenitch\, violin \nFestival Orchestra & guest artist Maria Ioudenitch sponsored by Ari Rifkin\, in memory of Leonard Rifkin\nMaestro Runnicles sponsored by Susan Jane & Nicholas J. In 2023\, she won the Opus Klassik Award in the category “Chamber Music Recording of the Year” for her debut album\, Songbird\, on Warner Classics. \nThe young violinist’s innovative programming is reflected in her album Songbird. She performs violin concertos by Brahms\, Barber\, Dvořák and Glazunov\, as well as Prokofiev’s First Concerto\, while in recital programs she presents works by Lili Boulanger and Germaine Tailleferre alongside the wellknown violin repertoire. \nHighlights of the 2025/26 season included debuts with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop\, the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra under Marie Jacquot\, the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra under Jan Willem de Vriend\, and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davies. She toured Munich\, Vienna and Ljubljana with the Basel Symphony Orchestra and Markus Poschner. Ioudenitch also performs extensively in the US and Canada\, including appearances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony. \nShe gives recitals with pianist Roman Borisov at the Brucknerhaus Linz\, in Staufen and at London’s Wigmore Hall. She is a member of the chamber music collective ensemble132\, with whom she will release an album of works by Stravinsky and Schumann in early 2026. Her chamber music partners include Inmo Yang\, Stephen Waarts\, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker\, Julian Steckel and Pablo Barragán. \nMore recently\, she has appeared as a guest soloist with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra\, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie\, the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra\, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic\, the Dresden Philharmonic\, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She collaborates with conductors such as Andrey Boreyko\, Sir Donald Runnicles\, Alpesh Chauhan\, Marta Gardolińska\, Holly Hyun Choe\, Jonathan Bloxham\, Yi-Chen Lin\, Ryan Bancroft\, Kevin John Edusei\, Stanislav Kochanovsky\, Andrew Manze\, Robin Ticciati and Ruth Reinhardt. \nIoudenitch grew up in Kansas City and began playing violin at the age of three with Gregory Sandomirsky. She studied with Ben Sayevich at the International Center for Music in Kansas City\, with Pamela Frank and Shmuel Ashkenasi at the Curtis Institute of Music\, and with Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory\, before completing the Professional Studies Program at the Kronberg Academy with Christian Tetzlaff. \n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us in the lobby at 5 PM for a Pre-Concert Talk\, an inside look into the music led by GTMF violinist Heather Kurzbauer. Talks are sponsored by the Goodman Family Foundation\, in memory of Roy and Barbara Goodman.

SUMMARY:Classical Music Listening Club at Teton County Library
DESCRIPTION:Cinematic Soundscapes: Whether crafted for the silver screen or the concert hall\, music is a powerful way to take us to imaginative new places by giving us a soundtrack. We’ll study Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony to see how a composer put the sounds of nature into his music\, then see how golden age film composer Erich Korngold brought the sound of the movies to his violin concerto. Finally\, we’ll see how these pieces influenced modern film scores\, including John Barry’s music for Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves.
