The Concerto and the Symphony: We know that most orchestra concerts have a concerto on the first half and a symphony on the second half – but what exactly do those terms mean, and how have they evolved throughout music history? We’ll use two beloved works from GTMF’s opening classical concert – Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 – to understand the key concepts behind the two most common forms in the orchestral repertoire, as well as compare them to examples of earlier and later styles.
Dive into classical music with the Grand Teton Music Festival! Suitable for interested novices and seasoned fans alike, this adult education group will explore the history, theory and stories behind epic classical works each week. Led by Stoner Family Education Curator Meaghan Heinrich, prepare for the coming weekend’s Festival Orchestra concerts or simply join the discussion in the Classical Music Listening Club.
