On the Road: Celestial Sounds at Murie Ranch

There is a particular feeling that comes from standing outside at night—surrounded by others, under a vast and open sky—where stillness and wonder arrive together.

Celestial Sounds: In a special collaboration with Wyoming Stargazing, GTMF percussionist Craig Hauschildt curates a program of music meant to be heard after dark! The night sky comes alive in this uniquely atmospheric concert, perfect for the peaceful setting of the Murie Ranch.

The evening features works for marimba, vibraphone, bottles, bells, guitar, and violin, exploring the remarkable range of color and voice that percussion and string instruments can carry. You’ll hear music that shimmers and drifts—Christopher Cerrone’s haunting Memory Palace; Bach’s beloved Andante in A minor, transcriptions of peace-filled piano works by Pärt, Liszt and Cage; a premiere by Emma Wine for chimes, and Evan Chapman’s Cassiopeia, named for the constellation and written to evoke the quiet wonder of a night sky.

Together, these pieces form a single arch of beauty, stillness, and shared presence. We invite you to breathe deeply and embrace the deep quiet of the night.

Join us at 8 PM for refreshment followed by a Front Porch Conversation with astronomy educator Dr. Samuel Singer and GTMF percussionist Craig Hauschildt. They’ll discuss the pairing of stargazing and music and will lead an interactive musical experience using flowerpots and metal mixing bowls that everyone can join.  You can bring your own flowerpot or bowl, but we will have several for people to use.

The concert and stargazing will begin as the sun disappears behind the Tetons, so bring a blanket, a flowerpot (or metal mixing bowl), friends, and loved ones for this unique experience featuring Craig and other special GTMF guests.
