Michelle Cann to tickle the ivories Sunday – JH News & Guide

Since the age of 14, internationally renowned pianist Michelle Cann has played in orchestras all over the world. At 3 p.m. Sunday, she will make her Grand Teton Music Festival debut in Walk Festival Hall.

A true veteran of the stage, Cann has performed as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony, and orchestras in both Atlanta and Cincinnati. Last year, she received both the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Alumni Achievement Award and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award, as well as the Sphinx Medal of Excellence for her commitment to racial diversity in classical music.

As a result, GTMF Executive Director Emma Kail is “delighted” to welcome Cann to the festival. “Michelle’s virtuosity and artistry brings [the music] to life, and I’m sure audiences will love it,” Kail said.

In true GTMF fashion, Cann will be presenting a combination of classical and contemporary pieces in her recital on Sunday, including works from Liszt and Ravel in the classical category and a piece by Nathan Gulla in the other.

“This evening presents such a wide variety of musical styles,” Kail said. “From toe-tapping blues to beautiful, cascading melodies to rhythmically driven Argentinian themes and everything in between.”
