National Youth Orchestra to play Barber, Berlioz – JH News & Guide

The Grand Teton Music Festival’s audience can catch these potential stars at the start of their trajectory when they visit Walk Festival Hall as part of a national tour that will take the orchestra from the East Coast to the West through the end of JulyThis year, Sir Andrew Davis — conductor laureate of the Toronto, Melbourne and BBC symphony orchestras — leads the 120-member NYO, presenting in Jackson Hole Berlioz’s “Symphony Fantastique” and Valerie Coleman’s “Giants of Light,” commissions for the ensemble’s 10th anniversary by Carnegie Hall, the group’s parent organization.

Also on the program, internationally touring violin star Gil Shaham will solo in Barber’s Violin Concerto. Violinist Hilary Hahn performs with the group elsewhere on its tour.

…The orchestra is made up of teenagers from all across the country who auditioned for competitive and prestigious seats. The nation’s wide diversity is well represented by the student musicians, Davis said, and includes 16-year-old violinist Evan Whipple of Casper, Wyoming.
